About this product

Broad bean "Hangdown Gruenkernig" (Vicia faba) — a very productive mid-early variety. Each pod usually holds 4–5 medium green seeds, and it is the green seed that makes it good in the kitchen: picked young it is sweet and tender, left to ripen it gives a rich, nutty stew.

The plant grows up to 120 cm on a strong upright stem. Broad beans are hardy and cope with our spring: they can be sown as early as April, while other legumes are still waiting for warmth.

The pack holds 50 g of seed — not a sample, but a proper row. Producer Baltic Agro, Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist

Sow early. In April, as soon as the ground allows. Broad beans take a light frost, and an early sowing keeps them ahead of blackfly: a late sowing coincides with the peak of that pest.

Spacing. 5–6 cm deep, 10–15 cm apart in the row, 40–50 cm between rows. In a crowded row the lower pods get no light.

Pinch the tips. When the plant is about a metre tall and the lower pods have set, pinch out the tips: it pushes energy into the pods and removes the sweetest spot for blackfly.

Support. On a windy site run string along both sides of the row — a tall stem snaps under the weight of the crop.

No nitrogen needed. Broad beans fix their own. After harvest cut the haulm and leave the roots in the soil.
