Apie prekę
Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) is an old, reliable perennial vegetable whose juicy, tart stalks are the first harvest of the spring garden. Buy rhubarb in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
The large leaves form a dense clump; the stalks are green to reddish and pleasantly sour – for pies, crumbles, jam and compote. Harvest runs from early May to the end of June.
The clump grows about 0.6–1 m tall and up to 1 m wide, with taller flower stems. Rhubarb is very winter-hardy, long-lived and crops in one spot for 10 years or more – a perfect plant for the Estonian climate.

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn with plenty of room – one plant needs about 1 m². Dig deeply and add plenty of compost or manure; set the buds 2–3 cm below the surface.
Watering and feeding. Water generously in dry spells – moisture gives juicy stalks. Feed in spring with compost or a nitrogen-rich fertiliser and again after harvest.
Care. Do not pick in the first year and only lightly in the second. Pull (do not cut) the stalks with a twist at the base and always leave at least half the leaves. Remove flower stems as soon as they appear.
Gardener's tip. Stop harvesting at the end of June so the plant can build strength for next spring. The leaf blades are not edible but make good mulch. Divide the clump every 8–10 years.
