'Royal Lilac' (cultivar name 'Bolesław Chrobry') is a large-flowered evergreen rhododendron bred by Jan Ciepłucha in Poland as part of the Royal Rhododendrons series. In May the shrub is covered with large rounded trusses of rich purple, bell-shaped flowers with a delicate brown blotch in the throat. The leathery dark green leaves decorate the garden all year.
The shrub is vigorous and dense, dome-shaped, reaching about 2 m in 10 years. It tolerates frost down to −30 °C (zone 4), so it suits Estonian gardens well. Supplied as a large plant in a 15-litre pot for instant impact.

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in partial shade, sheltered from wind and from spring midday sun. Dig a wide hole about 40–50 cm deep and fill it with acid ericaceous (rhododendron) compost. Keep the root ball level with the soil – do not plant deeper.
Watering and feeding. Rhododendrons need even moisture: water deeply in dry spells, preferably with rainwater. Feed in spring and early summer with a rhododendron fertiliser; stop nitrogen from late July.
Care. Mulch the root zone with 5–10 cm of pine bark or conifer litter – the roots are shallow, so do not hoe around them. After flowering carefully snap off the faded trusses without damaging the new buds.
Gardener's tip. Water thoroughly before the ground freezes – evergreen leaves lose water in winter too. In the first winters shade the plant from February–March sun with shade cloth to prevent leaf scorch.
