Gooseberry "Rita" (Ribes uva-crispa) is a modern Latvian variety that is almost thornless and bears large reddish-purple berries.
The bush is medium-sized and the berries are large and juicy, easy to pick thanks to the few thorns. They are good fresh, for jam and compote.
The variety is notable for high resistance to disease and overwinters well. It grows in a sunny spot with fertile soil.

Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Plant in autumn or early spring in a sunny spot with fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Set the bush 5–6 cm deeper than it grew in the pot to encourage new shoots.
Care. Mulch the soil with compost or rotted straw. Space bushes 1.2–1.5 m apart so the berries get good airflow.
Watering and feeding. Water at the root, especially while the berries are filling. Apply a nitrogen fertiliser or compost in spring and a potassium-phosphorus one in autumn.
Winter and pruning. The bush overwinters without cover. Prune in early spring or late autumn: cut out shoots older than 4–5 years, weak ones and those lying on the ground.
