About this product

Gooseberry Ribes uva-crispa "Rodnik" is an early, nearly thornless variety bred in Moscow, Russia, and registered in 2001. Its yellow-green berries with a red blush on the sunny side are among the first gooseberries to ripen. Buy gooseberry "Rodnik" in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The berries weigh 5–7 g, are round-oval with a smooth thin skin and have a sweet-tart dessert flavour with a delicate aroma. The bush is of medium vigour, upright and dense; the shoots carry few thorns, which makes picking and pruning easy.

The variety is very winter-hardy (wood and flower buds tolerate down to -35 °C) and has excellent resistance to American gooseberry mildew. Self-fertile, it crops reliably – up to 7–9 kg from a mature bush.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot without standing water. Dig a hole about 40×40 cm and add compost; set the bush 5–7 cm deeper than it grew in the pot. Space bushes 1–1.5 m apart.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first summer and while the berries swell. Feed with a nitrogen fertiliser in spring and a potassium-phosphorus one after harvest; mulch the root zone with compost.

Care. Prune in early spring: remove drooping, diseased and over 5–6-year-old branches, keeping 10–15 shoots of different ages. In Estonia the berries ripen in early July – pick promptly, as ripe berries may drop in a rainy summer.

Gardener's tip. Mildew resistance means less spraying, but an open, airy bush also stays cleaner of other diseases. Pick slightly under-ripe berries for jam and let them ripen fully for fresh eating.
