Advice from our agronomist
When to sow. Sow directly in the bed from late April to late May, once the soil has warmed to at least 8 °C; depth 2–3 cm, row spacing 30 cm. For an earlier crop, raise seedlings and plant them out in May.
Sowing. A beet “seed” is really a cluster, so thin the seedlings at 2–3 leaves to 8–10 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with loose, neutral soil; do not use fresh manure.
Care. Water evenly, especially in dry weather; loosen between rows and mulch. Beetroot needs boron – spray with a boric acid solution if necessary.
Feeding and harvest. Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser, avoiding excess nitrogen. Harvest roots in September – early October before frost, twisting off the tops and leaving 2–3 cm of stalks; store at 0–2 °C in damp sand – the roots keep until March.
