Brussels sprouts Brassica oleracea 'Groninger' is an old, proven Dutch variety, here in seed from the Lithuanian company Agrofirma Sėklos (Žalia stotelė range). Buy 'Groninger' Brussels sprout seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the packet holds 1 g.
It is medium-early, with a growing period of about 104 days. Plants reach 50–60 cm and set firm green sprouts along the stem. The crop withstands frost down to −10 °C, and a light frost makes the sprouts sweeter.
The packet holds about 260–310 seeds. Eat the sprouts fresh, boiled or braised, or pickle, ferment and freeze them. For storage, lift whole plants with their roots and heel them into soil in a cellar – they stay fresh long after the season.

Agronomin neuvot
Planting. Sow transplants in March–April, 1.5 cm deep, and keep seedlings bright and cool (+12…+16 °C) so they do not stretch. In April–May, after hardening off, plant them out in full sun at 60–70 × 50 cm.
Watering and feeding. Brussels sprouts need plenty of water – water regularly, especially in hot weather. Dig in compost before planting; feed 2–3 times in summer with a balanced fertiliser and with potash in late summer for firm sprouts.
Care. Hoe the soil and earth up the stems lightly; stake tall plants. Use fleece or netting against cabbage whites and root flies. Remove yellowing lower leaves.
Gardener's tip. In early September pinch out the top of the stem – the plant stops growing upwards and the sprouts fill out noticeably (the producer's advice).
