Advice from our agronomist
Planting Plant in spring (late April – May) or autumn (September) in a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil; places with standing water are unsuitable. Plant in a row 40–50 cm apart with 1.5–2 m between rows, and provide support for the canes (posts with wire). Raspberry is self-fertile.
Watering Water regularly, especially during flowering and ripening – berry size and yield depend on moisture; avoid standing water. Mulch the soil.
Pruning On summer-fruiting types cut fruited canes to the ground after harvest and keep 6–8 strong young canes for next year. On autumn-fruiting (remontant) types cut all canes down in autumn or early spring. Remove surplus shoots so the row does not become too dense.
Feeding and winter care Feed in spring with compost or an organic fertiliser and in June with a complex berry fertiliser; in August–September give potassium and phosphorus and no nitrogen in autumn. Most cultivars tolerate Estonian winters; in autumn tie the canes together and mulch the soil to protect the roots from frost.
