Salix caprea "Kilmarnock" is a weeping goat willow grafted on a stem – a compact umbrella-shaped tree with branches cascading to the ground, small enough for a little garden or a large container. Buy a Kilmarnock willow on a short stem in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
In early spring, in March–April before the leaves, the hanging shoots are covered in large silvery-grey catkins with yellow anthers – this is the male form and one of the first food sources for bees. In summer the crown is dense and green, and the leaves turn yellow in autumn.
Because it is top-grafted, its height is set by the height of the stem; the crown is usually 1–1.5 m wide. It is very hardy (RHS H6) and well suited to the Estonian climate.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny spot. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, add compost and plant at the same depth as in the pot. Tie the stem to a stake so the wind cannot snap the graft.
Watering and feeding. Willows like moisture: in the first summer water deeply once or twice a week during dry spells, more often in containers. Feed in spring with compost or a little general fertiliser.
Care. After flowering thin out crowded and crossing branches and shorten shoots that touch the ground. Always remove any wild shoots from the stem or roots – they come from the rootstock.
Gardener's tip. In a container use a large, heavy pot and move it to a sheltered place or wrap it in winter so the roots do not freeze through.
