About this product

Salvia nemorosa is a tough perennial sage with dark violet-blue flower spikes that brighten a sunny border from early summer into autumn. Buy it in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

It flowers from June to September, especially if cut back after the first flush. The flowers and violet bracts are a magnet for bees and butterflies, while the aromatic leaves are left alone by slugs and deer.

It forms an upright clump 30–70 cm tall. It is hardy (zone 4, to −34 °C) and drought-tolerant, ideal for sunny, drier gardens in Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in full sun in loose, well-drained soil, 30–40 cm apart. Add sand or grit to heavy clay and dolomite lime to acid soil.

Watering and feeding. Water after planting until established, then only in long droughts. Feed sparingly – too much nitrogen makes stems floppy.

Care. When the first flush ends (July), cut the flower stems back by about half – the sage will flower again within a few weeks. In spring cut last year's dead stems to the ground.

Gardener's tip. Salvia nemorosa pairs beautifully with yellow and white perennials, roses and grasses – its violet-blue makes the other colours glow.
