Advice from our agronomist
Planting Plant in spring (May) in a sunny spot with well-drained, moderately fertile soil; wet, heavy clay is unsuitable. Set the crown level with the soil and water. Space plants 30–40 cm apart.
Watering Water regularly in the first year; an established plant is drought-tolerant and needs watering only in long dry periods.
Pruning After the first flowering cut the flower spikes back – the plant often flowers again; in spring cut old stems near the ground. Divide the clump every 4–5 years.
Feeding and winter care Feed lightly with compost in spring; too much nitrogen causes floppiness. Hardy; a wet autumn and winter are more dangerous than frost – ensure good drainage.
