Caucasian pincushion flower Scabiosa caucasica
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Scabiosa caucasica is a perennial from the Caucasus with large pale blue to lavender-blue flower heads that brighten the second half of summer. Buy it in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery for a soft, natural look.
It flowers from July to September. The flat heads, 6–8 cm across with a pale centre, stand on long stems and make excellent cut flowers. The plant is a great nectar source for bees and butterflies.
It grows 40–60 cm tall. It is frost-hardy (zone 4, to −34 °C) but dislikes winter wet – plant it in full sun in well-drained, limy soil.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in spring in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, 30–40 cm apart. Add a little dolomite lime to acid soil and sand or grit to heavy clay.
Watering and feeding. Water after planting and during long dry spells. Feed sparingly – a little compost or perennial fertiliser in spring is enough.
Care. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Do not cut the basal rosette back in autumn; in winters with little snow cover lightly with spruce branches. Divide every 3–4 years in spring.
Gardener's tip. For bouquets, cut heads just as they open – they last about a week in a vase. The more you cut, the more new flowers appear.
