Advice from our agronomist
Planting Plant in spring (May) in a sunny spot with well-drained, even poor or sandy soil; wet soil is unsuitable. Set the crown level with the soil and water. Space plants 25–35 cm apart.
Watering Water moderately in the first year; an established plant is drought-tolerant and needs watering only in long dry periods.
Pruning Remove last year's dead stems in spring; flower heads of taller cultivars can stay over winter for interest. Divide the clump every 3–4 years.
Feeding and winter care It needs little fertiliser – a thin layer of compost in spring is enough. Hardy; good drainage is important so the roots do not rot.
