Onion Allium cepa 'Stuttgarter Riesen' is an old German variety and one of Europe's most popular; here in seed from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy 'Stuttgarter Riesen' onion seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the packet holds 1 g.
It is a late variety with large bulbs of about 60–70 g, flattish-round, with golden-yellow skins and a pungent taste. Use it for frying, stewing, pickling and salads – and above all it stores very well through winter. The green leaves are edible too.
Sow in March–April, 2–2.5 cm deep, at 45 × 6 cm, and harvest in September. It grows best in humus-rich light loam or sandy loam that dries early in spring, in a sunny, weed-free spot.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Sow onions from seed as early as possible: under cover or as transplants in March, outdoors in April–May, 1.5–2.5 cm deep. Use loose, fertile, neutral, weed-free soil; cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes and cabbage are good preceding crops.
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil moist until emergence and while leaves grow, water less from midsummer and stop 3–4 weeks before harvest. Give nitrogen early on, then potassium and phosphorus; do not use fresh manure.
Care. Thin seedlings at the 1–2 true-leaf stage and weed regularly – young onions cannot compete with weeds. Hoe shallowly between rows and do not earth up the bulbs.
Gardener's tip. In an Estonian summer a late onion from seed is safest raised as transplants: sow in trays in March and plant out in early May so the bulbs ripen fully and store better. A thick sowing also gives you your own onion sets for next year.
