About this product

Lemon balm, spearmint and chamomile discs — a set for tea drinkers: three medicinal herbs on seed discs, one for each cup. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial culinary, medicinal and bee plant: it fits anywhere lemon fits and makes the classic calming evening tea.

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the gentler relative of peppermint — less menthol, a softer taste. It goes into desserts, salads, soups, marinades and drinks. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is an anti-inflammatory herb used for stomach ache and a sensitive stomach and as a mild sleep aid; it flowers from June and looks good in the bed.

Each disc is 8 cm across: set it on the compost in a pot, press it down and water. Three discs per packet. Producer Baltic Agro, Estonia.

Advice from our agronomist

Setting the disc. Put each disc in its own pot on moist compost and press it down; no need to cover. Keep the sowing evenly moist until the seedlings are up.

Give mint its own place. Mint spreads by its roots and takes over a whole bed in a couple of years. Keep it in a pot, or sink a bottomless bucket into the bed.

Picking balm. Cut the leaves for tea before flowering starts — that is when the essential oil peaks. After flowering the flavour dulls.

Chamomile self-sows. If you do not want that, remove the heads before the seed ripens. For tea, pick the flowers when the petals begin to bend downwards.

In winter. Balm and mint overwinter outdoors; in a pot keep them cool and bright, but do not feed them — winter is their rest.
