About this product

Beetroot Beta vulgaris 'Cylindra' is a well-known variety with long, cylindrical roots, here in seed from the Lithuanian producer Nojaus sėklos. Buy 'Cylindra' beetroot seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the packet holds 3 g.

It is medium-early. The roots are long and even, with deep red flesh that keeps its colour when cooked. The cylindrical shape is handy in the kitchen: it slices into equal rounds for salads, roasting and pickling. The crop stores well through winter.

Sow in April–May, in several batches if you like; early sowing is possible as soon as the soil can be worked. Harvest from June to October. Beetroot likes non-acid, fertile, moderately moist loam kept free of weeds; do not add fresh manure.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Sow from late April to May, once the soil reaches +8…+10 °C, 3–4 cm deep in rows 25 cm apart (10–15 g of seed per 10 m²). Soaking the seed for 24 hours beforehand gives quicker, more even emergence.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly, especially while the roots swell – uneven moisture makes the flesh woody and ringed. Do not use fresh manure; lime acid soil beforehand. Beetroot responds to potassium and boron (wood ash, a boron fertiliser).

Care. Each beet 'seed' is a cluster of several embryos, so seedlings come up in groups. Thin twice: at 1–2 true leaves, and again when the roots are 1–2 cm across, leaving 8–10 cm between plants.

Gardener's tip. Don't throw away the beets pulled at the second thinning – they are tender baby beets for salads, and the leaves can be cooked like spinach.
