Japanese spirea Spiraea japonica is an easy, hardy flowering shrub, offered here as assorted varieties. Buy Japanese spirea in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the exact variety depends on availability and can be confirmed when ordering.
Plants are compact, reaching about 0.4–1.5 m depending on the variety. From midsummer flat heads of pink, crimson or white flowers appear at the shoot tips, and many varieties also have yellow, orange or reddish foliage.
Japanese spirea is ideal for low hedges and edging, mixed borders and slopes. It copes well with Estonian winters (RHS H6, to −20 °C and below) and needs very little care.

Planting. Plant in spring or early autumn in a sunny spot at the depth of the root ball; for a hedge space plants 40–60 cm apart.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly during dry spells in the first summer. Feed in spring with a general shrub fertiliser and mulch to keep moisture in.
Care. Cut back hard in early spring – Japanese spirea flowers on the current year's shoots. Removing faded flower heads encourages a second flush.
Gardener's tip. Plant several varieties with different leaf and flower colours side by side for a bright, low-maintenance edging all summer.
