About this product

Japanese spirea "Denistar" (Spiraea japonica) is a low, compact deciduous shrub with deep pink flower clusters from mid-June into autumn. New leaves are scarlet, maturing to dark green and turning bronze in autumn.

It suits low hedges, border edges, rock gardens, group plantings and containers. The exceptionally long flowering period makes it a valuable summer shrub.

Spirea is undemanding, hardy and takes pruning well. It flowers best in a sunny spot. Buy Spiraea japonica "Denistar" at the Allikasilm garden centre.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or autumn in a sunny spot, 40–50 cm apart for a hedge. Mix compost into the planting hole and keep the crown level with the soil.

Care. Deadhead faded flower heads to keep the blooms coming. Mulch the soil to keep it moist and weed-free.

Watering and feeding. Water well in dry spells, especially in the first year. In spring apply a general shrub fertiliser or compost.

Pruning and winter. In early spring cut the shrub back by half or to 15–20 cm for more abundant flowering. Hardy, no special protection needed.
