Japanese spirea 'Walbuma' (sold as MAGIC CARPET) is a low, dense and colourful shrub bred at Walberton Nursery in England from seedlings of 'Goldflame'. It is valued for foliage that changes colour through the season. Buy Japanese spirea 'Walbuma' in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
Young leaves are red, turning golden yellow in summer and russet red in autumn, while new shoots stay reddish all season. From June to September it carries flat heads of deep pink flowers that attract butterflies and bees.
The shrub grows 30–60 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide, is very hardy and undemanding about soil. Use it for low hedges, the front of borders, rock gardens and as ground cover.

Agronoma ieteikumi
Planting. Plant from spring to autumn in a sunny spot – the more sun, the brighter the foliage. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and add compost. For a hedge space plants 40–50 cm apart, for ground cover use 3–4 plants per m².
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first summer, later only in dry spells. In spring give compost or a shrub fertiliser; avoid too much nitrogen, which makes the leaves greener.
Care. In early spring cut all shoots back to 10–15 cm: the spirea flowers on the current year's growth and stays compact. Deadhead after the first flush to get more flowers and fresh red leaves. Remove any shoots with plain green leaves.
Gardener's tip. Pair 'Walbuma' with blue or silver plants (lavender, lamb's ears, blue junipers) – the red and gold foliage stands out beautifully against them.
