Sweet corn Zea mays 'Golden Bantam' is a famous old yellow-kernelled variety, here as organic seed from the Organic Way range of the Lithuanian company Agrofirma Sėklos. Buy 'Golden Bantam' sweet corn seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery – the packet holds 3 g.

It is medium-early, with plants 1.4–1.5 m tall carrying 2–3 long cobs of sweet yellow kernels with excellent flavour. The kernels are rich in sugars, starch and protein; eat the cobs fresh or boiled, or can and freeze them.

One gram holds about 4 seeds, so a packet has roughly 12 seeds – enough for a small block. Sow in May 2.5–4 cm deep at 70 × 25 cm; pick from mid-August, when the kernels are soft and juicy. It likes fertile, moist, free-draining soil.

Agronoma ieteikumi

Planting. In Estonia it is safer to raise transplants: in late April sow one seed per pot and plant out in early June. Sow direct in the second half of May, once the soil reaches +10…+12 °C, 2.5–4 cm deep at 70 × 25 cm.

Watering and feeding. Corn needs plenty of water, especially when tassels appear and kernels fill – water generously. Dig in compost or well-rotted manure before planting; at 40–50 cm give an organic nitrogen feed.

Care. Plant corn in a block of several short rows rather than one long row – it is wind-pollinated, and blocks give fully filled cobs. Earth up the plants at 30–40 cm to strengthen the roots.

Gardener's tip. A cob is ready when the silks have turned brown and a kernel pressed with a fingernail gives milky juice. Cook or freeze straight after picking – the sugars quickly turn to starch.
