Winter fleece 1.6 x 5 m, 75 g/m2 — a thick white cover that protects in winter not so much from cold as from the February sun. That is when conifers and evergreens take the worst damage: the sun makes the needles lose water while frozen ground gives the roots none, and the plant dries out on its feet.
The same fleece covers rhododendrons, roses, hydrangeas and young stock — everything that winters on the edge here. The material passes air and moisture, so nothing moulds underneath as it does under plastic.

Advice from our agronomist
When to cover. Only once the ground has lightly frozen. Covering too early keeps the plant warm and it never goes dormant — and that increases winter damage rather than reducing it.
Leave an air gap. Do not wrap the fleece tightly: build a frame of branches or battens so air stays between the fabric and the plant.
Secure the edges. Winter wind tears an unsecured edge loose overnight. Weigh the edges down with stones or peg them.
Water beforehand. Most winter damage is desiccation, not frost: water the shrubs thoroughly before the ground freezes.
Uncover on a cloudy day. In spring remove the fleece when it is overcast, not in sunshine — otherwise the plant is scorched on the very day you uncover it.
