Parastā īve (Taxus baccata)

Par preci
English yew (Taxus baccata) is an evergreen conifer with soft dark green needles that tolerates clipping very well, which is why it has long been used for hedges, topiary and formal shapes.
Yew grows slowly, tolerates shade and forms a dense shrub or small tree 3–6 m tall in cultivation (up to 15–20 m in the wild). Buy English yew in Estonia at ALLIKASILM.
In autumn female plants ripen red fleshy arils; all other parts of the plant are poisonous, so plant yew away from playgrounds and grazing animals. Hardiness is USDA zone 5–6, so in Estonia choose a sheltered site.

Planting. Choose a site sheltered from winter sun and wind; partial shade or shade is fine. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball with the root collar at soil level; on heavy clay add sand or gravel drainage.
Care. Yew tolerates clipping excellently: shape the crown in late spring or late summer by cutting back young growth. Mulch the root zone with 5 cm of bark.
Watering and feeding. In the first two years water weekly in dry weather; established plants are moderately drought tolerant but dislike standing water. Apply conifer fertiliser in spring.
Winter care. Cover young plants for the first winter with spruce branches or white fleece so the needles do not scorch in winter sun; mulch the roots and shake heavy wet snow off the crown.
