About this product
Hicks yew, Taxus × media "Hicksii", is an upright, columnar evergreen conifer that reaches about 3–4 m in height and 1–2 m in width when mature. Its dense, dark green habit has made it one of the most popular yews for hedging.
The needles are glossy, dark green and soft; female plants carry red, berry-like arils in autumn. Yew tolerates shade and grows happily under trees where other conifers struggle.
Use it for hedges, topiary and as a specimen; it accepts hard pruning. Note: all parts of the plant (except the red aril) are poisonous, so keep it away from places where children or pets play.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Plant in April–May or in September while the soil is warm. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, blend it with garden soil and compost; add drainage on clay; keep the root collar level with the ground. Space plants 0.5–0.7 m in a hedge, 1.5 m as a specimen. Site: sun or part shade, sheltered from drying winds.
Care. In the first two years never let the soil dry out; a 5–7 cm layer of bark mulch keeps moisture in and suppresses weeds. Hoe gently because the roots are shallow.
Watering and feeding. In dry weather water once a week (10–15 litres per plant). Feed in spring with a conifer fertiliser containing magnesium and stop feeding after July.
Winter care and pruning. In the first winters wrap young plants in spruce branches or fleece to protect them from winter sun and wind. Mature plants are hardy. Clip in April or August; yew regrows even from old wood, so it can be rejuvenated by hard pruning.
