Eastern arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) — Thuja occidentalis is a hardy evergreen conifer widely used for hedges, groups and specimen planting; the species form has a conical crown.

The foliage is scale-like, yellowish green and bronzy in winter. Annual growth is about 15–30 cm; wild trees reach 10–15 m, cultivated plants usually 3–6 m. It tolerates wet soils and clipping.

It suits tall hedges, wind and privacy screens and garden borders. For a hedge plant 50–80 cm apart and clip during the growing season, avoiding cuts into old wood.

Planting. Plant from April to May or in September in sun or light part shade. Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained; limy and temporarily wet soil is tolerated. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, keep the root collar level with the ground, water thoroughly and mulch with 5 cm of bark.

Care. Clip hedges in spring and midsummer, leaving green growth. Shedding of inner needles in autumn is normal.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first years, once or twice a week in dry summers; mulch retains moisture. Feed with a conifer fertiliser in spring and early summer; avoid nitrogen from August.
