About this product

Canadian hemlock Tsuga canadensis is a graceful evergreen conifer with drooping branches and soft dark-green needles that carry two silvery-white stripes beneath. In the wild it reaches 12–25 m; in gardens it grows more slowly.

It suits shady and part-shady sites, specimen planting, informal hedges and larger parks. Young plants are ornamental from a few years old.

Winter hardy (USDA zones 3–4), it prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soil and a wind-sheltered position.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in spring or September in a wind-sheltered spot, in part shade or shade, in acidic moist soil (add peat or conifer compost). Remove any wrapping from the root ball and set the root collar level with the soil.

Care. Mulch thickly with bark or conifer litter to keep roots cool and moist. Compacted or drying soil is not tolerated because the roots are shallow.

Watering and feeding. Water regularly for the first 2–3 years and deeply in dry spells. Feed in spring with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants.

Winter and pruning. Protect young plants from winter wind and spring sun. Trim lightly in spring if needed and avoid cutting into old wood.
