About this product

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Toro' is a mid-season highbush blueberry known for very large, firm, sweet berries and reliable crops. Bred from 'Earliblue' × 'Ivanhoe', it was introduced in 1987. Buy a 'Toro' blueberry plant in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.

The berries are large, light blue and firm, borne in long clusters that ripen fairly evenly, so picking is quick. In Estonia the crop ripens in late July – August. The bush crops well even after a cool spring.

The bush is strong and upright, 1.2–1.8 m tall, with pink flowers and red autumn colour. It is hardy (USDA zone 4). It needs acidic soil (pH 4–5.5) and sun. Use the berries fresh, in desserts, frozen and for jam.

Advice from our agronomist

Planting. Plant in a sunny spot in acidic soil: dig a hole about 50 × 50 cm and fill it with acid peat mixed with conifer bark. Space plants 1–1.5 m apart. Never use lime or manure.

Watering and feeding. Blueberry roots are shallow, so keep the soil constantly moist and water with rainwater. Feed in spring and early summer with a blueberry or rhododendron fertiliser; mulch with conifer bark or needles.

Care. For the first 2–3 years remove only damaged shoots. After that, each spring cut out 1–2 of the oldest canes (over 5–6 years old) and weak growth to keep berries large.

Gardener's tip. Plant a second variety that flowers at the same time (for example 'Bluecrop' or 'Brigitta Blue') for better cross-pollination and bigger crops. Net the ripening fruit against birds.
