Weigela "Variegata" (Weigela florida) is a variegated weigela — an ornamental deciduous shrub whose green leaves are edged creamy white. In late spring it is covered with pinkish-white funnel-shaped flowers, so it looks good all season.
It grows 1.5–2 m tall and as wide. It flowers in May–June, and the leaves turn yellowish in autumn. Hardy to about -20 °C (RHS H6); it overwinters well in Estonia, though shoot tips may be damaged in severe winters. Available in 9 cm and 3 L pots.
Ideal as a specimen, in groups, as a flowering hedge and at the back of mixed borders. The variegated leaves brighten partly shaded corners and the flowers attract bees. Not to be confused with the dwarf "Nana Variegata".

Agronomo patarimai
Planting. Plant from spring to early autumn in sun or partial shade, sheltered from wind. Dig a hole twice the size of the pot, add compost and plant at the same depth.
Watering and feeding. Water regularly in the first summer, later in dry spells. Feed with shrub fertiliser or compost in spring; no nitrogen after August so the shoots ripen before winter.
Care and pruning. Prune right after flowering: shorten flowered shoots and remove a few of the oldest stems at ground level. Cut out frost-damaged tips in spring and remove any all-green shoots.
Winter. Mulch the roots of young plants for the first winters and cover the crown with fleece if needed. Established shrubs usually overwinter in Estonia without protection; frosted tips regrow quickly in spring.
