Lettuce "Little Gem", 1 g
Seller: ALLIKASILM
About this product
Lettuce “Little Gem” (Lactuca sativa) is a small romaine-type lettuce and a classic of English gardens. The head is compact and upright, about 15 cm tall, so it fits where a big iceberg will not: a narrow strip of bed, a pot or a balcony box.
Size is not the only point, though. “Little Gem” combines two things at once: the crunchy midrib of a romaine and the soft leaf of a loose-leaf lettuce. The heart stays sweet and juicy, and this variety has practically no bitterness. One head is just right for a single family meal, so this lettuce is never left to wilt in the fridge.
The pack contains 1 g. It can be sown in succession all summer, so there are fresh heads until autumn.

Advice from our agronomist
Sow in succession. Lettuce does not wait: one sowing gives one batch, all ready at once. Sow a short row every 2-3 weeks and there will be fresh heads all summer.
Avoid midday heat. In hot weather lettuce bolts and turns bitter. A summer sowing does better in part shade, or in the shade of a taller neighbour such as a pea trellis.
Water evenly. Interrupted watering brings bitterness and split heads; lettuce wants soil that stays moist but not wet.
