Leaf lettuce "Grand Rapids" is an early Lactuca sativa variety for spring, summer and autumn harvests. The seeds are from the Lithuanian company Nojaus sėklos, 1 g per packet. Buy "Grand Rapids" lettuce seeds in Estonia from the ALLIKASILM nursery.
It forms a loose rosette of light green, frilly leaves and does not make a head. It grows fast, ready 45–50 days after sowing. The flavour is very good, the leaves tender and crisp, and it resists rotting.
Grow it outdoors or in a greenhouse, in sun or partial shade. Sow from March to August – sowing every 2–3 weeks gives fresh leaves all summer.

Advice from our agronomist
Planting. Sow in a greenhouse from March and outdoors from April to August, 0.5–1 cm deep in rows 15 cm apart. The seeds are fine: mix them with dry sand for even sowing. Thin to 10 cm and later to 15–20 cm, using the thinnings in salads.
Watering and feeding. Lettuce needs constantly moist soil – when dry, the leaves turn bitter and the plant bolts. Water in the morning at the base. Add compost to poor soil before sowing; without nitrogen feeds lettuce accumulates fewer nitrates.
Care. Hoe and weed. Shade plants in hot weather. Pick leaves as they grow, starting with the outer ones, or cut the whole rosette.
Gardener's tip. Sow "Grand Rapids" little and often, every 2–3 weeks, for fresh lettuce from May to September. Make summer sowings in partial shade – leaves are more tender in the cool.
